Despite being moderate in the first months of 2021 (below 30€/MWh), gas price is reaching maximums, 180 €/MWh during the last days of December 2021, so gas prices increased 500% in a very few months.

What’s more, emission allowances have increased from 5.8€ in 2017 (avg) to 83.0€ in January 2022. Consequently, the cost has increased by a dramatic 1300% in five years.

Taking all these things together, the competitiveness of energy-intensive industries mostly based on high-temperature heating is being seriously threatened. Today, 90% of this heating still comes from boilers based on fossil fuels, like gas.

High-temperature heat pumps (HTHPs) based on vapor compression systems offer the possibility to decarbonize and avoid the dependence on gas for heating production up to 160 °C (or even more). HTHPs are powered by electric energy, which can generate by low carbon emission factor technologies. Moreover, the coefficient of performance is about 3 to 4, so it means that 1 kWh electricity allows the revalorization of 3 to 4 kWh high-temperature heating.

HTHPs represents a great opportunity to reduce operating costs, increase company competitiveness, and prepare for a greener and more sustainable future.
